Underwater photography is the branch of electronic photography concerned with capturing still images underwater.
It contains specialised technological and skills-based challenges that aren’t present in terrestrial photography. As a result, transitioning from shooting above to below water isn’t easy. Consequently, underwater photography is so much more than just taking a camera underwater and seeing what will happen. Put simply, it is an art form all of its own. To clarify, it requires intense training and detailed preparation.
On the other hand, it’s popular. In 2021 underwater photography took many of the top awards and even the illustrious photographer of the year title, at the most prestigious wildlife competition in the world- The British Natural History Awards.
