Courses & Eligibility

Am I eligible?

Yes – anyone can join! There are no specific qualifications or prerequisites required for our wildlife courses.

However, if you wish to participate in our underwater courses, you must hold a valid SCUBA certification. Please refer to the individual course details for specific requirements.

How long are the courses?

All courses run for 28 days, starting on the 1st of each month and ending on the 28th.

What will a typical day look like?

Each day combines fieldwork, lectures, and practical filming or photography sessions. Schedules vary depending on weather and wildlife activity, ensuring maximum hands-on experience.

How many participants are in each course?

To maintain a high-quality, hands-on and personalised learning environment, we keep our group sizes small – typically 3 to 5 participants per course.

Do I need to pay the full course fee upfront?

No. However, to secure your place, a non-refundable deposit of USD $750 is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance must be paid in full at least 30 days prior to the start of your course.

What does the course fee include?

The fee covers tuition, accommodation, in-country transportation, field excursions, and airport transfers. It does not include international flights, travel insurance, meals, or personal expenses.

Who owns the media I collect during the course?

All media (video and audio) you create during the course remains your property. However, the following licensing conditions apply:

Africa Media retains full rights to use your media for any non-exclusive purpose, free of charge and without the need for additional permission or compensation (including for promotional use or sale).

You may license your footage only on a non-exclusive basis to third parties.

Will I receive a certificate after the course?

Yes. Upon completion, participants receive an Africa Media Certificate of Completion recognising their training and experience.

Safety & Requirements

Is it safe to film the wildlife?

Yes. Your safety is our top priority. You’ll receive comprehensive safety training before any field activities and will always be supervised by experienced professionals. As long as safety guidelines are followed, the risk of injury is extremely low.

Do I need travel/medical insurance?

Yes. All participants are required to have valid travel and medical insurance for the duration of their stay in South Africa. While Africa Media provides thorough safety briefings and enforces strict safety protocols, our courses involve working in environments where accidents can occur. You will not be covered by Africa Media for any injuries, illnesses, or medical emergencies.

Although the risk of injury – particularly from wildlife – is extremely low when safety guidelines are followed, comprehensive insurance is essential to ensure you are protected in case of unforeseen incidents.

Please also ensure that your personal belongings and equipment are adequately insured, as Africa Media cannot be held liable for any loss, theft, or damage during your stay.

Do I require a work or volunteer visa?

No. You will not be employed by or receive payment from Africa Media, so a work or volunteer visa is not required. Participants typically enter South Africa on a temporary visitor’s (tourist) permit.

If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a volunteer visa through your local South African embassy or consulate.

Will I need any vaccinations?

Africa Media does not require any specific vaccinations to participate in our courses. However, we strongly recommend that you consult review country’s travel health recommendations for South Africa and ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date.
