Wildlife Filmmaking

Develop, film and edit your own wildlife film making documentary on one of Africa’s most stunning game reserves.

Wildlife Filmmaking Training Program

Whether you just have a desire to film Africa’s fascinating wildlife, or you are aiming to build a career in the competitive field of wildlife filmmaking, then Africa Media’s wildlife filmmaking experiential training program will be perfect for you.

Africa Media’s wildlife filmmaking program is a 4 week experiential learning program that guides film students into the heart of wild Africa. At its core, the program aims to develop a new generation (of all ages) of professional wildlife filmmakers capable of entering into one or more to the various roles that comprise the wildlife filmmaking industry.

The program pairs students with some of Africa’s top professional wildlife filmmakers and wildlife experts who will act as both your guides and personal tutors during your time on the program. They will share their industry knowledge and filmmaking skills with you as you research, develop, film and edit your own personal wildlife documentary.

Over the 28 days program, students will move through the three primary phases of producing a broadcast standard wildlife documentary: pre-production, production, and post production. Pre-production phase will be dedicated to ensuring students gain a sound understanding of camera operation, editing techniques, audio use, sequencing, storytelling and developing your own personal documentary. During production, the team will spend nine days on one of Africa’s top wildlife reserves where we will focus purely on capturing incredible content for your documentary. Post-production will be spent dedicated to editing and presenting a final 5 minute documentary.

This program is aimed at introducing students to the real world of wildlife filmmaking, the highs, lows, challenges that wildlife filmmakers face daily when trying to document the world’s incredible wildlife and wild places.

A great experience!!

I was part of the October 2017 film program. Everyone at Africa Media were extremely kind and helpful. We learned about so many important skills, and got to use them in the field while at schotia, which was such a fantastic experience. I wish there would have been more cultural experiences, but the film program overall is wonderful and I would highly recommend the experience!

Confidence to be a wildlife filmmaker

My internships was by far one of the most amazing experiences I was fortunate to come across through my career. Coming from a traditional filmmaking background, having studied film directing for 4 years, I was hoping to expose myself to more of a specialized insight into the wildlife filmmaking industry focusing mainly on practical and field knowledge and that was exactly what I got. Having the core of the course structure revolving around the process of(...)

So many awesome memories

I throughly enjoyed my internship with Africa Media. It gave me more confidence in my filmmaking abilities, so many awesome memories, and friends that will last a lifetime. Getting to spend 10 days in the African bush just filming wildlife was one of the best experiences of my life. The things we saw and captured on film are things people only dream of. The course leader and the field specialist were especially helpful in making my experience enjoyable(...)

An incredible journey into Africa

My name is Ryan and I study Zoology with Herpetology at Bangor University in North Wales in the UK. I love studying the natural world and finding out its secrets. I have known for a long time that I wanted to go into wildlife filmmaking. I remember working one night on a report for university and while I went on a five-minute break I was on Facebook and I noticed an advertisement from Africa Media. I clicked on the link and started looking on the website.(...)

I really enjoyed this program and was able to get a quality short film out of it as well. I thought there was a nice variety of activities offered and I believe I got a good idea of what Africa has to offer. I would recommend the program to others in my field.
